What it's about
Erin Lowry argues that millennials struggle with money less from irresponsibility than from never being taught the basics, and from letting emotion and social awkwardness (guilt, shame, fear of conflict) drive financial decisions. She walks readers from the psychological groundwork of a healthy money mindset through the mechanics of budgeting, debt, credit, and investing, insisting that money conversations with friends, partners, and family are as important as the numbers themselves.

Who it's for
- A twenty-something with student debt and no budget who feels overwhelmed rather than lazy - Someone who avoids checking their bank balance because it triggers shame - A young professional who understands the concept of saving but has never opened an investment account
What’s inside
- 1Money Is Emotional Before It's Mathematical1 min
Financial failure is more often a psychological problem than an arithmetic one, so fixing the mindset must come before fixing the spreadsheet.
- 2Build a Budget You'll Actually Keep1 min
A budget only works if it's built around a person's actual spending psychology rather than an idealized version of how they think they should live.
- 3Talk About Money With the People Closest to You1 min
Avoiding money conversations with friends and partners to preserve comfort in the moment causes larger financial and relational damage later.
- 4Debt Isn't a Moral Failing, But It Needs a Plan1 min
Paying off debt requires a chosen method matched to personal behavior, not blind adherence to whichever method is mathematically optimal.
- 5Credit Scores Are a Game With Knowable Rules1 min
A credit score is not a measure of moral worth or financial health but a specific, gameable number that rewards particular behaviors regardless of income.
- 6Save Before You Invest, But Don't Wait Too Long1 min
An emergency fund must exist before investing begins, but excessive caution about market risk can cost a young investor more than the risk itself.
- 7Big Life Purchases Deserve Their Own Rules1 min
Major financial milestones like housing and cars should be evaluated by total cost of ownership and life flexibility, not by monthly payment affordability alone.
- 8Money Habits Compound Like Interest1 min
The specific tactics matter less than establishing durable habits early, because financial behavior compounds over decades the same way money does.
