We have here the issue of the distress of Paul and his fellow-travellers; they escaped with their lives and that was all, and that was for Paul's sake. We are here told (Act 27:37) what number there were on board - mariners, merchants, soldiers, prisoners, and other passengers, in all two hundred and seventy-six souls; this is taken notice of to make us the more concerned for them in reading the story, that they were such a considerable number, whose lives were now in the utmost jeopardy, and one Paul among them worth more than all the rest. But this that he says, "God hath given thee all," is not spoken boastfully, but in the wish to win those who were sailing in the ship: for he spoke thus, not that they might feel themselves bound to him, but that they might believe what he was saying. "God hath given thee;" as much as to say, They are worthy indeed of death, since they would not listen to thee: however, this is done out of favor to thee.
Then after so great a storm he does not speak as insultingly over them, but as wishing that at any rate he might be believed for the future. Wherefore also he alleges what had taken place for a testimony of the truth of what was about to be said by him. ...And he foretells two things; both that they must be cast upon an island, and that though the ship would be lost, those who were in it should be saved-which thing he spoke not of conjecture, but of prophecy-and that he "must be brought before Caesar."
"and behold, God has granted you all." Therefore the idea that things are governed by fate or chance is shown to be false. For if they had not been saved through Paul, all would have been doomed to perish on the ship, this being a gift from God to honor the righteous man.
