Here we have, I. The tokens of God's good-will to Isaac. He blessed him, and prospered him, and made all that he had to thrive under his hands. 1. His corn multiplied strangely, Gen 26:12. He had no land of his own, but took land of the Philistines, and sowed it; and (be it observed for the encouragement of poor tenants, that occupy other people's lands, and are honest and industrious) God blessed him with a great increase. He reaped a hundred fold; and there seems to be an emphasis laid upon the time: it was that same year when there was a famine in the land; while others scarcely reaped at all, he reaped thus plentifully. Isaac digged again the wells of water--The naming of wells by Abraham, and the hereditary right of his family to the property, the change of the names by the Philistines to obliterate the traces of their origin, the restoration of the names by Isaac, and the contests between the respective shepherds to the exclusive possession of the water, are circumstances that occur among the natives in those regions as frequently in the present day as in the time of Isaac.

Isaac indeed builds an altar even in the Law and pitches his tent; but in the Gospels he does not pitch a tent, but builds a house and lays a foundation. For hear Wisdom saying of the Church: "wisdom," it says, "built herself a house, and set up seven columns." Hear also Paul saying of this: "for no one can lay a foundation besides that which has been laid, which is Christ Jesus." Where therefore there is a tent, even if it be pitched, without doubt it must be dissolved; but where there are foundations and the house is built "upon the rock," that house is never dissolved, "for it has been founded upon the rock." Nevertheless Isaac there too digs a well, and never ceases from digging wells, until there arises "a fountain of living water" and "the rush of the river gladdens the city of God."
