These be the sons of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob in Padanaram, with his daughter Dinah: all the souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty and three.

Old Jacob is here flitting. Little did he think of ever leaving Canaan; he expected, no doubt, to die in his nest, and to leave his seed in actual possession of the promised land: but Providence orders it otherwise. Note, Those that think themselves well settled may yet be unsettled in a little time. Even old people, who think of no other removal than that to the grave (which Jacob had much upon his heart, Gen 37:35; Gen 42:38), sometimes live to see great changes in their family. It is good to be ready, not only for the grave, but for whatever may happen betwixt us and the grave. Observe, 1. How Jacob was conveyed; not in a chariot, though chariots were then used, but in a wagon, Gen 46:5.…

all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were threescore and ten--Strictly speaking, there were only sixty-six went to Egypt; but to these add Joseph and his two sons, and Jacob the head of the clan, and the whole number amounts to seventy. In the speech of Stephen (Act 7:14) the number is stated to be seventy-five; but as that estimate includes five sons of Ephraim and Manasseh (Ch1 7:14-20), born in Egypt, the two accounts coincide.

The sons of Pharez were Hezron and Hamul - It is not likely that Pharez was more than ten years of age when he came into Egypt, and if so he could not have had children; therefore it is necessary to consider Hezron and Hamul as being born during the seventeen years that Jacob sojourned in Egypt, See Clarke on Gen 46:8 (note): and it appears necessary, for several reasons, to take these seventeen years into the account, as it is very probable that what is called the going down into Egypt includes the seventeen years which Jacob spent there.

WHAT DO YOU HEAR ABOUT THE SOULS OF JACOB? — In relation to what Scripture says, that Leah begot so many souls, or that so many souls left the thigh of Jacob, we must note how it is answered to those who try to confirm by this text that the fathers propagate the souls at the same time as the bodies. Well, no one can doubt that with this expression the author speaks of souls to refer to people, as when one mentions the part to refer to the whole. In spite of this, there is the problem of separating the part that has given name to the whole, that is to say, the soul, whose name designates the complete man, of what the text says next: “they left his thighs (Gen. 46:26).” Well, even if only the souls are mentioned, it is necessary to accept that only the body left Jacob. But to solve the problem we must investigate the modes of expression of the Scriptures. [
