Commentary
Matthew Henry on Joshua 13:1-6
Here, I. God puts Joshua in mind of his old age, v. 1. 1. It is said that Joshua was old and stricken in years, and he and Caleb were at this time the only old men among the thousands of Israel, none except them of all those who were numbered at Mount Sinai being now alive. He had been a man of war from his youth (Exo 17:10); but now he yielded to the infirmities of age, with which it is in vain for the stoutest to think of contesting. It should seem Joshua had not the same strength and vigour in his old age that Moses had; all that come to old age do not find it alike good; generally, the days of old age are evil days, and such as there is no pleasure in, nor expectation of service from. 2.…
This is the land that yet remaineth--that is, to be acquired. This section forms a parenthesis, in which the historian briefly notices the districts yet unsubdued; namely, first, the whole country of the Philistines--a narrow tract stretching about sixty miles along the Mediterranean coast, and that of the Geshurites to the south of it (Sa1 27:8). Both included that portion of the country "from Sihor, which is before Egypt," a small brook near El-Arish, which on the east was the southern boundary of Canaan, to Ekron, the most northerly of the five chief lordships or principalities of the Philistines.
Adam Clarke on Joshua 13:2
The borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri - The borders of the Philistines may mean the land which they possessed on the sea-coast, southwest of the land of Canaan. There were several places named Geshuri, but that spoken of here was probably the region on the south of Canaan, towards Arabia, or towards Egypt. - Calmet. Cellarius supposes it to have been a country in the vicinity of the Amalekites.
John Gill on Joshua 13:2
This is the land that yet remaineth,.... Unconquered and not enjoyed, namely, what is after described; and this account is given for Joshua's information, that he might know what to divide, and for the people of Israel's sake, that they might know what they had a right to a claim upon; what they should endeavour to possess themselves of, and what the Lord would deliver into their hands, provided they were obedient to his will, for, because they were not, hence many of these places never came into their possession, though divided to them by lot:
all the borders of the Philistines; whose country bordered and lay upon the shores of the Mediterranean sea, in the southwest of the land of Canaan:…
The Church Fathers
But he adds to these a divine response and says: "you are advanced in days, and the land that is left is very great." In the passages above it was said, as we observed, that "the land ceased from wars" and that "Jesus took all the land"; and here now it is written that "the land that is left is very great." Do you think that Scripture contains things contrary to itself? This is not to be suspected even lightly. But let us return to the spiritual understanding, and in it you will find nothing to be contrary. Consider the first coming of our Lord and Savior, when he came to sow his word in the world, how "he took all the land" by the mere casting of the seed, and how he put to flight from it the adversary powers and the apostate angels who had besieged the minds of the Gentiles, and meanwhile sowed the word and propagated the churches. This is his first possession of the whole land. But follow me, O hearer, along the subtle lines of the word, and I will show you how also a second time he takes this "land," which is now said to Jesus "to have been left in great part." Hear Paul saying of him: "for he must reign, until he puts all his enemies as a footstool for his feet." This, then, is the "land" which is now said "to have been left in great part," until "all" without exception "are subdued beneath his feet," and through these he may take possession of all men by inheritance. "And this is," it says, "the land which is left: all the borders of the Philistines," and very many others which follow. Much still remains, as far as concerns our times, which we see not yet "to be subjected to the feet of Jesus," who must indeed obtain all things. For there can be no end of things unless all things have first been "subjected" to him. For so also the prophet says that "all nations shall serve him," and: "from the ends of the rivers unto the ends of the earth. Before him the Ethiopians shall fall down," and: "from beyond the banks of the rivers of Ethiopia they shall offer sacrifices." Whence it is established that in the second coming Jesus will obtain this "great land which remains." But blessed are those who were obtained at his first coming; for these will be truly pleasing, who, while many adversaries resist and many enemies assail, receive by war and by arms the inheritance of the land of promise. But when someone has been subjected out of necessity — then, when…

Introduction to the Division of the Land. - Jos 13:1-7. Command of the Lord to Joshua to distribute the land of Canaan by lot among the nine tribes and a half. Jos 13:1 contains only the commencement of the divine command; the conclusion follows in Jos 13:7. Jos 13:2-6 form a parenthesis of several clauses, defining the last clause of Jos 13:1 more fully. When Joshua had grown old, the Lord commanded him, as he was advanced in years, and there was still much land to be taken, to divide "this land," i.e., the whole of the land of Canaan, for an inheritance to the nine tribes and a half, and promised him at the same time that He would drive out the Canaanites from those portions of the land th…
The Philistines were one of several groups in the great migration of the Sea Peoples from the Aegean region within a few decades after Israel’s entry into Canaan. They settled along the southwestern Mediterranean coast, west and southwest of Judah. They came from Caphtor or Crete (Deut 2:23; Amos 9:7). • These Geshurites were people from a southern territory, not the northern Geshurites (cp. Josh 12:5).
