Commentary
Matthew Henry on Joshua 13:7–end
Here we have, I. Orders given to Joshua to assign to each tribe its portion of this land, including that which was yet unsubdued, which must be brought into the lot, in a believing confidence that it should be conquered when Israel was multiplied so as to have occasion for it (Jos 13:7): Now divide this land. Joshua thought all must be conquered before any must be divided. "No," said, God, "there is as much conquered as will serve your turn for the present; divide this, and make your best of it, and wait for the remainder hereafter." Note, We must take the comfort of what we have, though we cannot compass all we would have. Observe,
1. The land must be divided among the several tribes, and t…
With whom--Hebrew, "him." The antecedent is evidently to Manasseh, not, however, the half-tribe just mentioned, but the other half; for the historian, led, as it were, by the sound of the word, breaks off to describe the possessions beyond Jordan already assigned to Reuben, Gad, and the half of Manasseh (see on Num 32:1; Num 32:33; also see Deu 3:8-17). It may be proper to remark that it was wise to put these boundaries on record. In case of any misunderstanding or dispute arising about the exact limits of each district or property, an appeal could always be made to this authoritative document, and a full knowledge as well as grateful sense obtained of what they had received from God (Psa 16…
The nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh - The other half tribe of Manasseh, and the two tribes of Reuben and Gad, had got their inheritance on the other side of Jordan, in the land formerly belonging to Og king of Bashan, and Sihon king of the Amorites.
John Gill on Joshua 13:8
With whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance,.... That is, along with the half tribe of Manasseh, but not with that half of it before mentioned, who was to haven division of a part with the nine tribes, but with the other half of the tribe settled beyond Jordan; with them the tribes of Reuben and Gad had received their portion at their own request, and so were to have no share in the present distribution:
which Moses gave them beyond Jordan eastward; at their desire, Numbers 32:1, and upon certain conditions to be performed by them, Numbers 32:20,
even as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them; this character of Moses, as the "servant of the Lord", seems to be…
The Church Fathers
But that also was read to us today, that Moses gave an inheritance to certain men; and after these things it is read that Jesus too, according to the precept of the Lord, distributed the inheritance. First, then, Moses distributed the inheritance, but second Jesus. Now understand Moses as the law. These, then, who lived according to the law received the inheritance first, but outside the land of promise. Then afterward, when they had received the land of inheritance, they do not possess it nor divide it among themselves, but they wait until it is distributed to them by lot through Jesus. Is not this evidently what the Apostle says to the Hebrews, writing about the "former fathers," whom he said "pleased God by faith"? And he added, saying: "but all these, having obtained testimony through faith, did not yet receive the promises, God providing something better for us, that they should not be made perfect without us." They have therefore already their "promise" and have found rest, and have been judged worthy through Moses to take the inheritance; nevertheless they too still fight and are in the contest on behalf of those who serve as soldiers under Jesus. But you ask who these are that fight, and what is that fight which they wage. I judge it thus, that all those "fathers" who "fell asleep" before us fight together with us and help us by their prayers. For so also I heard a certain one of the elder teachers saying, in that place where it is written in Numbers that: "that synagogue shall lick up this synagogue, as a calf licks up the green grass of the field." He said: why was a likeness of this kind taken up, unless because this is what is to be understood in the passage — that the "synagogue" of the Lord, which has gone before us among the saints, shall with mouth and tongue consume the adversary synagogue, that is, shall consume our adversaries with prayers and supplications? Not therefore with arms are we to fight against our invisible enemies, but with prayers and meditations on the word of God and with right works and right thoughts. For so also the fathers were armed, conquering by faith and by works. See, finally, that it is so written of them: "they believed," it says, "God and Moses his servant"; and "then Moses sang this song" and said: "let us sing to the Lord, for he has been gloriously honored." So then let us too, cultivating full faith and…

Introduction to the Division of the Land. - Jos 13:1-7. Command of the Lord to Joshua to distribute the land of Canaan by lot among the nine tribes and a half. Jos 13:1 contains only the commencement of the divine command; the conclusion follows in Jos 13:7. Jos 13:2-6 form a parenthesis of several clauses, defining the last clause of Jos 13:1 more fully. When Joshua had grown old, the Lord commanded him, as he was advanced in years, and there was still much land to be taken, to divide "this land," i.e., the whole of the land of Canaan, for an inheritance to the nine tribes and a half, and promised him at the same time that He would drive out the Canaanites from those portions of the land th…
As he had promised, God brought Israel into the land. Joshua next turned his attention to the allotment of the land to Israel’s tribes. • The tribal allotments gave geographical reality to the Israelites’ covenant with God and expressed the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Because God owned the land, the apportionment to the tribes was a gift. God gave them the land to dwell in and directed its distribution. • In these lists of tribal allotments, the author describes some borders in such detail that they can be plotted on a map while others were far less well defined.
