Commentary
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Joshua 22:10
THEY BUILD THE ALTAR OF TESTIMONY ON THEIR JOURNEY. (Jos 22:10)
when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben . . . built there an altar by Jordan--This altar was probably an immense pile of stones and earth. The generality of our translators supposes that it was reared on the banks of the Jordan, within the limits of Canaan proper. But a little closer examination seems to make the conclusion irresistible that its position was on the eastern side of the river, for these two reasons; first, because it is said (Jos 22:11) to have been built "over against," or in the sight of the land of Canaan--not within it; and secondly, because the declar…
The borders of Jordan, that are in - Canaan - This verse can never mean that they built the altar on the west side of Jordan, for this was not in their territories; nor could it be a place for the purpose of public worship to their own people, if built on the opposite side of Jordan; besides, the next verse says it was built over against the land of Canaan. It appears that when they came to the river they formed the purpose of building the altar; and when they had crossed it they executed their purpose.

And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of Canaan,.... To the banks of it, or the sand heaps, some take the word to signify, which were thrown up to restrain the waters from overflowing; some by Geliloth understand a place so called; and Jerom (g) says it was near Jordan in the tribe of Benjamin: but rather the word signifies the meanders, windings, and turnings, of the river (h); and such circuits and compasses it fetched near Jericho, as the same writer (i) observes, where we may suppose these tribes went over, and at a place where the river jetted out into the land of Canaan:
the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, built there an altar by Jordan; or "…
The Church Fathers
Do you wish that I prove to you still more evidently that among that former people, whom Moses foreshadowed in the "two and a half tribes," not all things were whole nor perfect? That history also declares it, which is written in this very little book of Jesus of Nave, when it says that the true altar was indeed in that land which Jesus was dispensing, yet these who were across the Jordan, that is, "Reuben and Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, made themselves an altar," but not a true altar, but one that held the type and pattern of the true altar which was with Jesus. Marvel, then, not at all if those who had built neither a whole nor a true altar had not received a whole knowledge of the Trinity.
After these things there was read to us that "the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, who were beyond the Jordan, had built up a huge altar; but the sons of Israel" — the rest, not knowing why this altar had been erected — "send Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, with ten men chosen from the several tribes," so that, if perhaps they had done this as those "departing from God," having become as it were "apostates" and acting against the commandment of God, they might be assailed by the rest of the sons of Israel; but if otherwise, that they might learn the cause. But those men give satisfaction concerning the altar and say: we know that the true altar is among you, where Jesus dwells, but we made this altar after the likeness of that altar which has been built among you, so that among us too the figure and image of the true altar may be held; "lest perhaps tomorrow," he says, it should please you "to say that the Jordan is a boundary between us and you" and that it itself sets the limit, and therefore "you have no portion" in our altar. Such were the replies they sent. But let us see what mystery this deed contains. The former people of the circumcision is designated in Reuben, who had been the firstborn; but also in Gad, who himself too is a firstborn, from Zilpah, and no less in Manasseh, the "firstborn." But when I say "firstborn," I speak according to time. These things, then, are said lest any division or separation should seem to exist between us and those who were just before the coming of Christ, but so that they might show themselves to be — even though they were before the coming of Christ — nevertheless our brothers. For although they then, before the coming of the Savior, had an altar, yet they knew and perceived that that altar was not the true one, but that it was the form and figure of this true altar that was to come. They knew this: that the true victims, those which could take away sins, were not offered on that altar which the firstborn people had, but on this one, where Jesus was; here the heavenly victims, here the true sacrifices are consummated. There comes to be, then, "one flock and one shepherd," those former just ones and those who are now Christians. But I wish, for the proof of these things, to call to mind also a certain history, if only the Lord deigns to grant that we may be able to…

On the way home, when the two tribes and a half had reached the border of Canaan, they built a large conspicuous altar in the district of the Jordan, in the land of Canaan, i.e., on this side of the Jordan: "a great altar to see to," i.e., one which caught the eye on account of its size, since it was to serve for a memorial (Jos 22:24.). The definition appended to Shiloh, "in the land of Canaan" (Jos 22:9), serves to bring out the antithesis "into the land of Gilead," by which we are to understand the whole of the country to the east of the Jordan, as in Num 32:29; Deu 34:1; Jdg 5:17, etc. נאחז, both in the form and meaning the same as in Num 32:30, made possessors, i.e., settled down. היּרד…

Rashi on Joshua 22:8
[Divide the spoils] with your brothers— Referring to Bnei Gad and Bnei Reuvein. There are some who interpret “brothers” in referrence to those who remained behind to guard the cities and the women and children. [Even though] they did not cross the Jordan— with the armed division, nevertheless they received a share of the spoils.1This practice was instituted by Avrohom. See Bereishis 14:24. Rashi comments there that Dovid learned from Avrohom’s action and established this as a tradition.
