The year of the redeemed is now come, which had been from eternity fixed in the divine counsels, and long looked for by them that waited for the consolation of Israel. After the revolutions of many ages, it is at length come, Isa 63:4. And, it is observable, it is in the very first month of that year that the redemption is wrought out, so much in haste was the Redeemer to perform his undertaking, so was he straitened till it was accomplished. And he promised,.... He undertook to deliver him into their hands; he laid himself under obligation to do it; he faithfully promised he would. The Arabic version renders it, he gave thanks; for the money he received, being well pleased he had made such a bargain; and so the word here used sometimes signifies; and indeed commonly either to confess; or to give thanks, in which latter sense it is used, in Matthew 11:25 but here rather it is to be understood in the sense of promising:

Now many shudder at the wickedness of Judas, yet do not guard against it. For whosoever despises the laws of truth and love, betrays Christ who is truth and love. Above all, when he sins not from infirmity or ignorance, but after the likeness of Judas seeks opportunity, when no one is present, to change truth for a lie, virtue for crime.
From then on he was seeking an opportunity to hand him over. But what sort of opportunity Judas was seeking, Luke has explained more plainly, saying: "And he was seeking an opportunity to hand him over to them without the crowd," that is, when the people was not about him, but he was apart with his disciples. And this he did, handing him over after the supper, when he was apart in the estate of Gethsemane; for Judas reckoned that the opportunity was his after the bargain which he made, when Jesus was not with the multitude. And see whether even until now this opportunity does not seem the same to the betrayers of the word of truth, who wish to betray Christ, God the Word, in the time of the persecution of Christians, when the multitude of believers is not about the word of truth and cannot hinder or restrain the persecutors, especially where few of the faithful are to be found. And since there is a time for all things, Solomon saying: "a time to give birth, and a time to die," and the rest, this is the time proper to the betrayers of the word of truth, when there are not many faithful about Christ.
