That is, obedient to his Lord's command, by the seasonableness of his teaching dispensing the word of life to a household which is to be nourished for the food of eternity.
Blessed is that servant, whom his lord, when he comes, shall find so doing. A great promise is proclaimed to faithful and prudent stewards, and it accords with those to whom he says: "be thou having authority over five cities", or: "be thou having authority over ten cities". For to be set over all the goods of the head of the household — what else does this make plain but that they are "heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ" and reign together with Christ, to whom the Father has handed over all his own things, as he himself says: "all power has been given to me in heaven and on earth"? And (in the manner of the son of a good father) being set over all the substance of the father, he shares this same dignity and glory with his faithful and prudent stewards, so that they too may be over every creature and power, so that they may be with Christ. And observe his interpretation of what he says: amen I say to you, that he will set him over all his goods. Understand for me (taking it as if by way of example) some king who has an entire kingdom under himself, with whom are many nations and cities and diverse places. Let him, then, divide among his satraps and the other princes, who have done something notably well, the fullness of his kingdom; and let him indeed set all of them over his whole kingdom, yet not each one over all things — but each one of them over some part of his kingdom: for instance, one indeed over ten cities, another over five. And thus they will all be over all the goods, while he alone holds all things, being, as it were, the sole king of all. And such is what he says: he will set him over all his goods.
