Then cometh Jesus with them,.... The eleven disciples, unto a place called Gethsemane; the Syriac version calls it Ghedsiman; the Persic, Ghesmani, so the Arabic; the Vulgate Latin, and the Ethiopic, Gethsemani: in Munster's Hebrew Gospel, and in the Vulgate Latin, and Arabic versions, it is called a "village"; and in the Ethiopic version, "a village of wine"; and in the Syriac and Persic versions, a place. Here, according to an Ethiopic writer, the Virgin Mary was buried by the apostles (d). Tyndale Open Study Notes on Matthew 26:36-46

This scene reveals the depth of Jesus’ awareness of the suffering that awaited him on the cross, as well as his utter commitment to God’s will (see 20:28). Expressions in 26:41-42 echo the Lord’s Prayer (6:9-13). 26:36 Gethsemane is the name of an olive orchard approximately 250 yards east of Jerusalem’s Golden Gate, overlooking the Kidron Valley on the edge of the Mount of Olives. Jesus and his disciples apparently met there often (Luke 22:39-40; John 18:1-2).
