Here is, I. The appointment of the pass-over sacrifices; not that which was the chief, the paschal lamb (sufficient instructions had formerly been given concerning that), but those which were to be offered upon the seven days of unleavened bread, which followed it, Num 28:17-25. The first and last of those seven days were to be sanctified as sabbaths, by a holy rest and a holy convocation, and on each of the seven days they were to be liberal in their sacrifices, in token of their great and constant thankfulness for their deliverance out of Egypt: Two bullocks, a ram, and seven lambs. After this follows the sixth festival, which is called of the "new fruits," that is, when the firstfruits of the new produce are offered. For when the field has been sown and diligently cultivated, and the crop has come to maturity, then in the perfection of the fruits the festival of the Lord is kept. If, therefore, you too wish to keep the feast day of the new fruits with God, see how you sow or where you sow, that you may be able to reap such fruits from which you may make God glad and keep a feast day. This you will not be able to fulfill otherwise, unless you hear the Apostle saying: "He who sows in the spirit, of the spirit shall reap life everlasting." If you so sow and so reap, you will truly keep the feast day of the new fruits. Finally, therefore, the prophet also admonishes, saying: "Renew for yourselves new tillage, and do not sow upon thorns." He therefore who renews his heart and his inner man from day to day, this man renews for himself new tillage and sows not upon thorns but upon the good earth, which renders him fruit thirtyfold or sixtyfold or a hundredfold. This, then, is he who sows in the spirit and gathers the fruits of the spirit. And the first of all the fruits of the spirit is joy. The same number of sacrifices is appointed for the day of the first-fruits, i.e., for the feast of Weeks or Harvest feast (cf. Lev 23:15-22). The festal burnt-offering and sin-offering of this one day was independent of the supplementary burnt-offering and sin-offering of the wave-loaves appointed in Lev 23:18, and was to be offered before these and after the daily morning sacrifice.

The Festival of Harvest was later called the Festival of Pentecost (see Acts 2:1); see also Lev 23:15-22. It celebrated the end of the barley harvest and the beginning of the wheat harvest in early summer (May~June). The Greek name Pentecost means “fiftieth day” (i.e., after Passover; see Acts 20:16; 1 Cor 16:8).
