And they departed from Rephidim, and pitched in the wilderness of Sinai. Eight miles from Rephidim; and from a mount of this name here were given the decalogue, with all other statutes and ordinances, judicial and ceremonial, and orders and directions for building the tabernacle, and making all the vessels appertaining to it, and which were all made during their stay here.

Sinai is itself a certain place of the desert, which above he mentioned as Zin; but here rather the place of the mountain, which is in that same desert, is named, which itself also is named from the name of the desert, Sinai. After therefore the soul has become of praiseworthy judgment and has begun to have right judgment, then the law is given to it by God, when it has begun to be capable of the divine secrets and of heavenly visions.

Tradition associates the wilderness of Sinai with a mountainous region in the southern Sinai Peninsula near Jebel Musa (Arabic for “mountain of Moses”), though scholars have suggested other locations.
