What it's about
Andrew Hodges reconstructs the life of Alan Turing, the mathematician who founded computer science, broke German naval ciphers at Bletchley Park, and was later prosecuted and effectively destroyed by the British state for being gay. Hodges argues Turing's scientific imagination and his outsider status were inseparable: his willingness to think outside inherited categories produced both his breakthroughs and his persecution. The book mattered because it restored a hidden, distorted figure to history at a time when Turing was barely known outside specialist circles.

Who it's for
- Readers interested in the history of computing and where its foundational ideas actually came from - LGBTQ readers and historians wanting a rigorously documented account of state persecution and its human cost - Anyone drawn to biographies of difficult, singular minds who don't fit institutions
What’s inside
- 1A Boy Who Asked How Things Worked1 min
Turing's childhood isolation and his indifference to social convention were not obstacles to his genius but its precondition.
- 2The Machine That Could Think About Itself1 min
Turing's 1936 paper solved an abstract problem in logic by inventing an imaginary machine, and in doing so accidentally defined what a computer is before any existed.
- 3Bletchley Park and the Practical Machine1 min
Turing's wartime codebreaking succeeded because he treated Enigma not as a puzzle to be intuited but as a mechanical system whose weaknesses could be found through equally mechanical, systematic search.
- 4From Cracking Codes to Building Brains1 min
After the war Turing pursued the practical construction of a general-purpose computer specifically because he believed the same machine could eventually be made to think.
- 5A Private Life Under a Public Law1 min
Turing's homosexuality was not a side detail of his biography but the fault line the British state used to destroy a man it had recently depended on for national survival.
- 6Death and the Unfinished Verdict1 min
Turing's death in 1954 was officially ruled suicide by cyanide poisoning, but Hodges shows the evidence is genuinely ambiguous and treats the certainty of that verdict as itself part of the tragedy.
- 7The Machine Outlives the Man1 min
Turing's ideas about universal computation and machine intelligence proved far more durable and consequential than his own institutional standing ever was during his lifetime.
About Andrew Hodges
Andrew Hodges is a mathematician and Fellow at Wadham College, Oxford, working in mathematical physics. He is not a professional biographer but a specialist whose technical fluency let him assess Turing's actual scientific and cryptanalytic work firsthand, which shapes the book's unusual depth on the mathematics itself.
