What it's about
Timothy Snyder argues that between 1933 and 1945, roughly fourteen million civilians were deliberately killed by the Nazi and Soviet regimes in a specific geographic zone stretching from central Poland to western Russia. By studying these two killing programs together rather than separately, Snyder shows how starvation, shooting, and deportation became interchangeable tools of state power, and how ordinary towns endured occupation by both regimes in succession.

Who it's for
- Readers of twentieth-century history who know the Holocaust mainly through Auschwitz and want the fuller, harder picture. - Students of authoritarianism who want to understand how mass killing becomes bureaucratic policy rather than chaos. - Anyone from Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, or the Baltic states seeking a history that treats their countries as more than a battlefield between larger powers.
What’s inside
- 1The Bloodlands as a Single Field of Study1 min
Treating Nazi and Soviet killing as one connected history, rather than two separate national stories, reveals patterns of mass death that neither regime's own archives make visible alone.
- 2Famine as Policy: The Holodomor1 min
The Ukrainian famine of 1932-33 was not a harvest failure but a targeted extraction of grain from a population Stalin had decided to break, killing roughly 3.3 million people.
- 3The Great Terror's National Operations1 min
Stalin's Great Terror of 1937-38 included quota-driven ethnic purges against Poles, Germans, and other diaspora nationalities, showing that Soviet killing was not purely about class but increasingly about presumed national loyalty.
- 4Poland Destroyed Twice Over1 min
The 1939 Nazi-Soviet Pact let both regimes simultaneously dismantle the Polish state and eliminate its educated class, making them collaborators in Poland's destruction rather than only later adversaries.
- 5The Hunger Plan and the Death of Soviet Prisoners1 min
Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union was planned from the start around deliberately starving tens of millions of civilians and prisoners to feed the Wehrmacht, a policy that killed more people in raw numbers than the gas chambers.
- 6The Holocaust by Bullets and by Gas1 min
Popular memory of the Holocaust centers on Auschwitz's gas chambers, but the majority of Jewish victims were shot at close range in pits and ravines across the occupied Soviet Union and Poland, a fact that changes where and how we should remember the genocide.
- 7Comparable Methods, Different Ends1 min
Overlapping tools of starvation, shooting, and deportation do not make Nazi and Soviet killing morally equivalent, since one pursued the total extermination of a defined people while the other pursued control that could stop once its goals were met.
- 8After the War: Expulsion and Continued Repression1 min
The defeat of Germany in 1945 did not end mass civilian suffering in the bloodlands, since postwar expulsions and Soviet deportations extended engineered demographic violence for years afterward.
