What it's about
Robert Putnam argues that American civic life declined sharply in the last third of the twentieth century, as people voted, volunteered, attended meetings, joined clubs, and even socialized informally with neighbors and friends far less than their parents had. Drawing on decades of survey data, he shows this erosion of social connectedness, which he calls declining social capital, has real costs for health, wealth, democracy, and safety. The book mattered because it turned a diffuse cultural anxiety into a measurable, documented trend and gave a generation of policymakers and scholars a shared vocabulary for civic decline.

Who it's for
- Anyone who has wondered why their town feels less connected than the one they grew up in - Policymakers and civic organizers looking for evidence behind intuitions about community decline - Students of American political culture who want the empirical backbone behind arguments about trust and democracy
What’s inside
- 1The Puzzle of the Missing Bowlers1 min
A measurable decline in organized group activities like bowling leagues signals a broader collapse in the associational habits that once bound Americans together.
- 2Defining Social Capital: Bonding, Bridging, and Trust1 min
Social capital splits into bonding ties among similar people and bridging ties across different groups, and it is the bridging kind that is most valuable to a diverse democracy and most fragile.
- 3The Long Civic Generation and Its Successors1 min
The mid-twentieth-century peak in American civic engagement was not the historical norm but the product of a specific generation shaped by depression and war, and its passing, not any single policy failure, explains much of the decline.
- 4Television and the Privatization of Leisure1 min
The rise of television, more than any other single factor Putnam can measure, retrained Americans to spend their free evenings alone in front of a screen rather than in the company of neighbors and civic groups.
- 5Suburban Sprawl, Commuting, and Fractured Time1 min
The physical redesign of American life around long commutes and sprawling suburbs consumed the time and geographic stability that civic participation requires.
- 6The Erosion of Religious and Union-Based Community1 min
Two of the historically largest sources of American associational life, organized religion and organized labor, both lost the density of local participation that once anchored millions of Americans in regular civic contact.
- 7Social Capital's Payoff: Health, Wealth, Safety, and Democracy1 min
Communities and individuals rich in social capital show measurably better outcomes in health, education, economic opportunity, and government performance, making its decline a practical problem and not merely a nostalgic complaint.
- 8Reversing the Trend: Lessons from the Progressive Era1 min
America has rebuilt its stock of social capital once before, during the Progressive Era, and that historical episode offers a template, though not a guarantee, for deliberate civic renewal today.
