What it's about
Stacy Schiff strips away two thousand years of Roman propaganda and Hollywood invention to reconstruct Cleopatra VII as a shrewd, highly educated head of state who ran the wealthiest kingdom in the Mediterranean. Schiff argues that the seductress myth was manufactured by Octavian's regime to justify a war and that the real story is one of statecraft, naval power, and dynastic survival in a world where female rule was almost unimaginable. The book matters because it separates the historical woman from the myth built to destroy her reputation.

Who it's for
- Readers who assume Cleopatra's story is mainly about Antony and want the political and economic context instead. - History readers interested in how propaganda from the ancient world still shapes modern reputations. - Anyone curious about women exercising real state power in the ancient Mediterranean.
What’s inside
- 1A Kingdom, Not a Romance1 min
Cleopatra's significance rests on her command of Egypt's wealth and administration, not on her romantic liaisons, which later ages inflated into the whole of her story.
- 2A Family Built on Killing Its Own1 min
Cleopatra's political ruthlessness toward her own siblings was not an aberration but the normal, expected behavior of Ptolemaic succession politics.
- 3Caesar's Egyptian Alliance1 min
Cleopatra's meeting with Julius Caesar in 48 BCE was a calculated political alliance to restore and secure her throne, not primarily a love affair.
- 4The Widow Who Chose Her Second Roman Patron1 min
Cleopatra's alliance with Mark Antony after Caesar's assassination was a renewed strategic bet on the winning side of Rome's civil wars, driven by necessity rather than passion.
- 5The Propaganda War Octavian Won1 min
The seductress myth was a deliberate political weapon manufactured by Octavian to justify civil war against a fellow Roman, not an objective account of Cleopatra's character.
- 6Actium and the Cost of Losing1 min
Cleopatra and Antony's defeat at the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE was a straightforward military and political failure, not evidence of any personal betrayal or cowardice on Cleopatra's part.
- 7Death as the Final Negotiation1 min
Cleopatra's suicide in 30 BCE was a calculated final act of political control, an attempt to deny Octavian the ultimate propaganda prize of parading her in chains through Rome.
