What it's about
Malcolm Gladwell argues that apparent disadvantages—physical limitation, poverty, learning disability, personal loss—often carry hidden compensations, while apparent advantages, past a certain point, stop helping and can even harm. Drawing on the biblical story as a template, he reexamines conflicts between the powerful and the powerless in education, business, war, and civil rights, contending that what we call strength and weakness are frequently miscalibrated by the people living through them.

What’s inside
- 1The Myth We Got Wrong1 min
The Bible's most famous mismatch was never really a mismatch, because David held the tactical advantage over Goliath from the start.
- 2The Inverted-U of Advantage1 min
More resources help only up to a point, after which additional money, size, or comfort can start working against the people they're meant to benefit.
- 3Desirable Difficulties1 min
A serious learning disability can force people to build compensatory skills so strong that the disability ends up net beneficial for those who survive it.
- 4Big Fish, Small Pond1 min
People judge their own competence by comparing themselves to those around them, so being near the top of a weaker group can beat being near the bottom of a strong one.
- 5The Limits of Power1 min
Authority that relies on force rather than perceived fairness generates more resistance than compliance, no matter how much force is applied.
- 6Fighting Giants on Your Own Terms1 min
Underdogs improve their odds dramatically when they refuse the rules of engagement the stronger side assumes will apply.
- 7Fear, Near Misses, and the Making of Courage1 min
Surviving danger up close, without being harmed, tends to build fearlessness rather than trauma.
- 8Forgiveness as Strength1 min
Choosing not to retaliate against those who have caused devastating harm can be a more effective form of resistance than punishment, because it denies the aggressor the conflict they depend on.
