What it's about
Millard reconstructs the 1881 shooting of President James Garfield to argue that he was killed less by Charles Guiteau's bullet than by the arrogance and ignorance of his own doctors, who ignored the antiseptic methods already proven in Europe. The book traces how a reluctant, principled president, a delusional stalker, and a stubborn physician converged to produce a death that reshaped American politics, medicine, and the civil service.
