What it's about
Tom Holland argues that the values modern secular societies take for granted—human equality, compassion for the weak, universal rights—are not products of reason overturning religion but the long afterlife of Christianity itself. Tracing two thousand years from Persia and Rome to #MeToo, he claims the West remains Christian in its moral instincts even where it has abandoned Christian belief, a claim that unsettles both religious and secular self-understanding.

What’s inside
- 1The Logic of the Ancient World1 min
Before Christianity took hold, the strong were simply entitled to dominate the weak, and almost no one in the ancient world thought otherwise.
- 2The Scandal of the Cross1 min
By placing a crucified man at the center of worship, early Christians performed a moral inversion so extreme that it permanently altered what suffering and weakness could mean.
- 3Paul's Invention of Common Humanity1 min
Paul's declaration that there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, slave and free, effectively invented the concept of a shared humanity that the ancient world had never needed and never built.
- 4The Church Against the State1 min
The medieval Church's centuries-long fight to keep spiritual authority independent of kings created the template later societies used to limit political power generally.
- 5Conscience Turned Inward1 min
The Reformation's insistence that faith is a private matter between the individual and God unintentionally created the modern idea of conscience as a right against external authority.
- 6The Enlightenment's Borrowed Vocabulary1 min
Enlightenment thinkers who believed they were overthrowing Christianity in fact smuggled its moral core into secular language and called it reason.
- 7Nietzsche's Unwelcome Logic1 min
Nietzsche argued that a truly post-Christian morality would have to abandon equality and compassion altogether, and modern secular humanists have simply refused to follow his logic to its conclusion.
- 8The Christian Grammar of Modern Outrage1 min
Movements like #MeToo, though entirely secular in their own self-understanding, still operate through a moral grammar of victim, confession, and redemption that has no source outside Christian theology.
