What it's about
Tara Westover recounts growing up in rural Idaho in a survivalist Mormon family that rejected public school, hospitals, and government oversight. She narrates how she taught herself enough to enter Brigham Young University at seventeen having never attended a classroom, and how the widening gap between her family's worldview and what she learned eventually forced her to choose between them and her own mind. The book argues that education is not primarily information but the capacity to question the stories you were raised inside, and that this capacity can cost you almost everything you love.
