What it's about
Angela Duckworth argues that achievement depends less on talent than on grit—a combination of sustained passion and persistence toward long-term goals. Drawing on research with West Point cadets, National Spelling Bee competitors, and elite performers, she contends that grit can be measured, predicts success better than IQ or talent in many settings, and can be deliberately cultivated. The book challenged prevailing assumptions about genius and reframed effort itself as a skill worth studying.

What’s inside
- 1The Myth of Talent1 min
Effort counts twice as much as talent because talent only determines how fast skill grows, while effort determines both skill and achievement.
- 2Defining Grit1 min
Grit is not simply working hard but maintaining the same overarching goal for years despite setbacks, failures, and boredom.
- 3Grit Grows1 min
Grit is not a fixed trait people either have or lack; it can be developed over time through experience and deliberate effort.
- 4Interest as the Foundation1 min
Passion for a pursuit typically develops gradually through repeated exposure and small triumphs, not from a single moment of discovery.
- 5Deliberate Practice1 min
Improvement at the highest levels comes not from raw hours of practice but from a specific, effortful, and largely joyless method called deliberate practice.
- 6Purpose Beyond the Self1 min
Long-term perseverance is sustained not just by personal enjoyment of an activity but by believing the work matters to other people.
- 7Hope and the Growth Mindset1 min
Gritty people are sustained by a specific kind of hope: the belief that effort can improve their future, which is learned rather than innate.
- 8Grit Is Also Grown by Others1 min
Individual grit is heavily shaped by parenting style and by the surrounding culture, not developed in isolation.
