What it's about
Anne Applebaum's history reconstructs the Soviet forced-labor camp system from Lenin's earliest experiments through Stalin's terror to Khrushchev's partial dismantling. Drawing on newly opened archives and hundreds of survivor accounts, she argues the Gulag was not a wartime aberration or bureaucratic accident but a deliberate, economically integrated institution central to Soviet rule, one whose scale and cost the Soviet state itself never fully tallied and whose memory post-Soviet Russia has never fully confronted.

Who it's for
- Readers of twentieth-century history who know the Holocaust well but little about Stalinist terror - Students of authoritarianism interested in how bureaucracies manufacture mass suffering through quotas and paperwork - Anyone drawn to survivor testimony and the question of how ordinary people endure and resist extreme systems
What’s inside
- 1An Improvised Beginning1 min
The Gulag began as improvisation rather than design, and its first true camp established a template the whole system would follow for three decades.
- 2Labor as Industrial Strategy1 min
The Gulag functioned less as a penal system for punishing crime than as a source of cheap, disposable labor for Stalin's industrialization drive.
- 3Arrest by Quota1 min
Terror inside the Gulag's feeder system was not the product of paranoid improvisation but of a bureaucratic quota regime administered like any other state target.
- 4Surviving the Camp Economy1 min
Physical strength mattered less to a prisoner's survival than securing a position that removed them from general labor.
- 5The People Who Ran It1 min
The camp system depended not on extraordinary sadists but on ordinary people pursuing career advancement and following institutional incentives.
- 6Deported Nations and Broken Families1 min
The Gulag's damage extended past individual prisoners to entire deported peoples and to children who bore its consequences without ever committing a crime.
- 7Rebellion From Within1 min
Prisoners were not merely passive recipients of Gulag violence; organized resistance, especially the 1954 Kengir uprising, helped force the regime toward reform.
- 8Dismantling Without Reckoning1 min
The system began shrinking after 1953 out of practical necessity rather than genuine moral reckoning, and elements of it persisted for decades afterward.
- 9A History Without a Monument1 min
Russia's failure to build a public reckoning with the Gulag comparable to Germany's confrontation with the Holocaust has left the crime unintegrated into national memory and vulnerable to revision.
