What it's about
Helen Macdonald's memoir traces how she trained a fierce young goshawk named Mabel after her father's sudden death, using the bird's demands as both escape from grief and a mirror for it. Braided with the story of T.H. White's disastrous 1930s attempt to train his own goshawk, the book argues that wildness is not therapy but a test: what people project onto animals reveals the shape of their own damage. It mattered because it broke the nature-memoir genre open, refusing tidy consolation.

What’s inside
- 1A Death That Cannot Be Metabolized1 min
Grief that has no ritual or explanation to hold onto pushes some people toward extreme, all-consuming projects rather than toward rest.
- 2Buying Mabel1 min
Choosing the most dangerous, least domesticated animal available was the point, not an accident, because only total difficulty could compete with grief for attention.
- 3Manning: The Discipline of Total Presence1 min
The rigid technical process of taming a raptor works as an anesthetic for grief precisely because it demands complete, moment-to-moment attention and offers no space for reflection.
- 4Wanting to Become the Hawk1 min
Grief can curdle into a wish to abandon human identity altogether, and that wish, however understandable, is a symptom to notice rather than a state to pursue.
- 5T.H. White's Gos1 min
White's earlier, failed attempt to train a goshawk shows that cruelty toward a wild animal often originates in a person's unresolved cruelty toward himself.
- 6What Hawks Reflect Back1 min
A goshawk has no inherent symbolic meaning; the meanings people assign to it — freedom, savagery, purity, escape — are evidence about the people, not the birds.
- 7Choosing to Come Back1 min
Recovery from grief required Macdonald to deliberately step back from the hawk-centered isolation she had built and re-enter ordinary human obligations, even though the hawk had been genuinely helpful.
- 8Grief Without a Resolution1 min
The book deliberately refuses to offer a tidy ending in which grief is resolved, because Macdonald's argument is that mourning does not conclude, it just changes shape.
