What it's about
J.D. Vance recounts his childhood in Middletown, Ohio, and Jackson, Kentucky, tracing how family chaos, addiction, and a fraying Appalachian culture nearly derailed him before the Marine Corps and Ohio State gave him a path to Yale Law School. The book argues that working-class white communities face a crisis that is as much cultural and psychological as economic, and that policy alone cannot fix what family instability and learned hopelessness have broken. It mattered because it appeared in 2016 just as commentators were trying to explain rural white political anger.
