What it's about
David McRaney investigates why people rarely change their minds through facts and arguments, and what actually works instead. Drawing on psychology research, cult exit counseling, and grassroots political canvassing, he argues that persuasion succeeds when it feels like understanding rather than debate. The book mattered because it arrived amid rising alarm over misinformation and polarization, offering evidence-based techniques—rooted in curiosity and listening—rather than louder facts or shame.

What’s inside
- 1The Fraud That Started an Investigation1 min
A famous, real effect in persuasion research turned out to rest on fabricated data, and the scramble to find out if the underlying claim was still true reveals how fragile our knowledge of belief change actually is.
- 2Why Correcting Someone Rarely Works1 min
The 'backfire effect'—the idea that correcting a false belief makes people cling to it harder—is real in some conditions but far less universal than popularized accounts suggest.
- 3Beliefs Are Identity, Not Just Information1 min
People hold many beliefs primarily because those beliefs signal membership in a valued group, which means changing the belief threatens the relationship, not just the opinion.
- 4People Know Less Than They Think1 min
Asking someone to explain, step by step, how a policy or mechanism actually works is more destabilizing to overconfident belief than presenting counter-evidence.
- 5Deep Canvassing: Trading Stories Instead of Facts1 min
Lasting attitude change happens when a conversation trades personal narrative and vulnerability rather than facts and arguments, because it lets people update their view without feeling defeated.
- 6Street Epistemology and the Value of Uncertainty1 min
Asking people to state their confidence level and explain how they arrived at it, using calm Socratic questioning, can loosen even deeply held convictions without any direct challenge to the belief's content.
- 7How Extreme Believers Actually Leave1 min
People escape conspiracy theories and extremist movements not through a single decisive argument but through an accumulation of doubts, a trusted relationship, and a moment that makes leaving feel possible rather than humiliating.
- 8Curiosity as the Only Reliable Solvent1 min
Genuine, non-strategic curiosity about why someone believes what they believe is the one consistent ingredient across every technique described in the book, and its absence explains most failed persuasion attempts.
