What it's about
Jon Krakauer investigates the 1992 death of Christopher McCandless, a young college graduate who gave away his savings, abandoned his identity, and walked into the Alaskan bush with minimal supplies, dying there four months later. The book argues that McCandless was neither a reckless fool nor a suicidal romantic but part of a recurring American tradition of seeking meaning through self-imposed hardship in wild places, a claim that remains genuinely contested.

What’s inside
- 1A Body in the Bus1 min
The mystery of an educated young man's death in the Alaskan wild demands explanation beyond simple foolishness.
- 2The Making of Alexander Supertramp1 min
McCandless's rejection of his birth identity and family was less an act of madness than a deliberate moral protest against a life he saw as built on lies.
- 3The Open Road1 min
The two years McCandless spent transient across the American West show him not as an isolate but as someone who formed real, reciprocal relationships even while renouncing family ties.
- 4Into Alaska1 min
McCandless entered the bush prepared with willpower and a handful of books but critically underequipped in the concrete skills survival required.
- 5The River and the Map1 min
A single geographic detail, the absence of a map showing a nearby cable crossing, turned an adventurous summer into a fatal trap.
- 6What Killed Him1 min
The scientific mystery of McCandless's death shows how physical explanation and moral judgment get tangled together in how the public receives his story.
- 7The Devils Thumb Parallel1 min
Krakauer's own dangerous solo climb as a young man is offered as evidence that McCandless's behavior belongs to a recognizable, not pathological, category of youthful risk-seeking.
- 8A Company of Vanished Men1 min
McCandless takes his place in a lineage of Americans who sought transcendence in wilderness and instead found death, suggesting a durable cultural pattern rather than an individual aberration.
- 9Verdict at the Bus1 min
Krakauer's claim that McCandless was neither a fool nor a saint but a serious, if reckless, seeker remains an interpretation rather than a settled fact.
