What it's about
Krakauer reconstructs the May 1996 storm that killed eight climbers on Everest, using his own presence on the mountain as a journalist-client to examine how commercial guiding, thin air, ego, and bad luck compounded into catastrophe. The book argues that Everest's commercialization created a dangerous mismatch between paying clients' skill and the mountain's real demands, and it mattered because it forced public reckoning with guided high-altitude tourism and the ethics of turning extreme risk into a purchasable product.

What’s inside
- 1The Summit and the Assignment1 min
Krakauer's presence as a journalist-client on a guided expedition set up the very conflict of interest that would later cloud judgment on the mountain.
- 2The Business of Everest1 min
Commercial guiding turned Everest's summit into a purchasable achievement, and that shift changed who was on the mountain and why.
- 3The Human Body at Altitude1 min
Above 26,000 feet, the human body is dying regardless of skill, and this physiological fact undercuts any illusion of full control.
- 4Turnaround Times and Their Erosion1 min
The disaster happened largely because a firm safety rule, the turnaround time, was abandoned under the pressure of summit fever and crowding.
- 5The Storm Arrives1 min
The storm itself was not unusually extreme by Himalayan standards, which means the deaths resulted more from position and timing than from an unforecastable act of nature.
- 6Deaths and Near-Deaths on the Mountain1 min
Individual acts of heroism and failure during the storm show that outcomes depended heavily on chance exposure, fatigue level, and who happened to be nearby, not just on skill or preparation.
- 7Blame, Guilt, and the Limits of Reconstruction1 min
Krakauer's own attempt to assign responsibility, including his criticism of guide Anatoli Boukreev, shows the danger of retrospective judgment applied to decisions made under oxygen deprivation and chaos.
- 8Aftermath and the Question of Why1 min
The disaster did not end commercial Everest guiding, which shows that public awareness of extreme risk does not reliably change behavior when the reward is a mythic accomplishment.
