The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked

What it's about
Adam Alter argues that addiction has quietly expanded beyond drugs and alcohol into behavior itself: the compulsive checking of phones, the endless scroll of feeds, the leveling-up of games. He contends this shift happened because tech and gaming companies learned to engineer products using the same psychological triggers that make slot machines and casinos so effective. The book mattered because it moved the conversation about tech overuse from a question of personal weakness to a question of deliberate design.

Who it's for
- Parents worried about their kids' screen time who want to understand the mechanics behind it - Tech workers and product designers questioning the ethics of engagement-driven design - Anyone who feels controlled by their phone and wants a framework, not just willpower advice
What’s inside
- 1The New Addiction Landscape1 min
Behavioral addictions to phones, games, and feeds now produce as much compulsive suffering as chemical addictions did in earlier decades, even though no substance is involved.
- 2The Machine Zone1 min
Unpredictable rewards, not steady ones, are the single most powerful driver of compulsive repetition, a finding that traces back to pigeons in a box.
- 3Why Willpower Isn't Enough1 min
Urging people to use more self-control ignores that the same cognitive resource used to resist temptation is deliberately targeted and depleted by product design teams.
- 4Goals That Never End1 min
Converting ordinary activity into a quantified, goal-driven pursuit makes people accelerate their effort as they near a target, turning even healthy behaviors like walking into compulsive ones.
- 5Feedback, Likes, and the Slot Machine in Your Pocket1 min
Features like the like button and the notification badge convert ordinary social approval into an unpredictable reward system that pulls people back far more often than genuine social need requires.
- 6Escalation and the Cost of Progress1 min
Games and platforms deliberately escalate the investment required over time, so that quitting feels like abandoning accumulated value rather than simply dropping a habit.
- 7Cliffhangers and the Architecture of 'One More'1 min
Automated cliffhanger mechanisms like autoplay remove the natural stopping points that once let a person's attention rest between installments of a story.
- 8Children, Vulnerability, and the Digital Playground1 min
Children are especially susceptible to behavioral addiction because their self-regulation circuitry is still developing, a fact reflected in how carefully some tech executives restrict their own children's access.
- 9Rebuilding the Environment: Friction as Cure1 min
The most reliable defense against behavioral addiction is not stronger willpower but the deliberate reintroduction of friction into the environment at the exact point of temptation.
