What it's about
Chanel Miller tells the story of being assaulted outside a fraternity party at Stanford in 2015, becoming known publicly only as "Emily Doe," and enduring a trial, a lenient sentence, and a viral reckoning. The book argues that survivors are wounded twice: once by an attacker, and again by systems—legal, medical, and cultural—that reduce them to evidence while protecting the futures of the accused. It mattered because her victim impact statement, read by millions, helped trigger the recall of the sentencing judge.

Who it's for

What’s inside
- 1Waking Into a Case File1 min
The trauma of sexual assault begins twice: once during the attack, and again when the survivor is converted into evidence.
- 2Becoming Emily Doe1 min
Anonymity meant to protect a victim can instead erase her, forcing her to fight to be seen as a person rather than a file number.
- 3The Grilling1 min
Cross-examination in assault trials often functions less to establish truth than to make the victim doubt her own memory and worth.
- 4The Cost of Pursuing It1 min
A trial can protect a defendant's future far more zealously than it protects a victim's present.
- 5Twenty Minutes1 min
Judicial concern for a young offender's potential can function as a proxy for protecting privilege, effectively pricing a victim's suffering below a promising future.
- 6Twelve Pages1 min
A victim's own words, heard unfiltered, can shift public understanding faster than years of legal proceedings.
- 7Visible and Unsteady1 min
Public sympathy for a victim does not automatically translate into structural change or personal peace; visibility can become its own burden.
- 8The Recall1 min
Removing a judge through public recall can correct one visible injustice while creating pressure that risks pushing future sentencing toward harshness out of fear rather than judgment.
- 9Reclaiming a Name1 min
Naming yourself after being defined by an attacker's crime is an act of authorship, not merely disclosure.
- 10Whose Story Gets Heard1 min
Whether a survivor is widely believed still depends heavily on how closely she matches a cultural script of the ideal victim.
