What it's about
Hope Jahren interweaves the biology of plants with the story of her own life as a scientist, arguing that both trees and researchers survive through patience, resilience, and unglamorous daily labor. The book challenges romantic notions of scientific discovery, showing instead a life of grant-writing, broken equipment, and precarious funding, while making the case that curiosity about the natural world is worth the struggle. It mattered because it exposed the hidden costs of an academic science career, especially for women, and popularized geobiology for a wide readership.

Who it's for
- Aspiring scientists who want an honest picture of what a research career actually costs - Readers curious about plant biology who prefer stories to textbooks - Anyone interested in the structural obstacles facing women in academic science
What’s inside
- 1A Childhood Among Instruments1 min
Jahren argues that a scientist's temperament is formed early, in this case by long solitary hours in her father's community-college physics lab, not by any innate genius.
- 2Learning to See Trees1 min
Jahren claims that trees survive by budgeting scarcity with a precision that puts human planning to shame, and that this biological fact should reshape how we think about resilience.
- 3Finding a Discipline by Accident1 min
Jahren suggests that a scientific specialty is often chosen less by passion than by which lab will actually let you in the door and keep you funded.
- 4Building a Lab Out of Nothing1 min
Jahren argues that running an academic lab is primarily an act of chronic improvisation and financial survival, not intellectual discovery.
- 5Bill: A Partnership Built on Work, Not Similarity1 min
Jahren claims that the most durable scientific partnerships are built on shared tolerance for tedious labor rather than on shared temperament or background.
- 6Motherhood, Illness, and the Body as Instrument1 min
Jahren argues that the physical and mental toll of a science career, especially pregnancy and bipolar disorder, is systematically hidden by the profession's culture of stoic productivity.
- 7What the Trees Actually Told Her1 min
Jahren argues that decades of unglamorous data collection eventually produce genuine, durable knowledge about the deep past, and that this payoff justifies the earlier described grind.
- 8Institutions That Do Not Want You to Stay1 min
Jahren claims that academic science's structure, especially tenure competition and chronic underfunding, actively pushes out capable researchers rather than merely failing to support them.
About Hope Jahren
Hope Jahren is a geobiologist who has run isotope-geobiology labs at the University of Hawaii, Johns Hopkins, and the University of Oslo. She has received three Fulbright awards and was the first woman to win both of the Young Investigator Medals given in her field. Lab Girl, published in 2016, was her first book.
