What it's about
Ève Curie's biography of her mother argues that Marie Curie's scientific achievement cannot be separated from her character: an almost ascetic discipline, formed by hardship in occupied Poland and sharpened by poverty in Paris, that let her spend years isolating radium by hand. Written by her own daughter shortly after Curie's death, it mattered because it fixed the public image of a woman scientist as rigorous, self-denying, and morally serious, at a moment when few such images existed.

Who it's for
- Readers curious about the personal cost behind a famous scientific discovery - Young scientists, especially women, looking for a model of sustained, unglamorous effort - Anyone interested in how family memory shapes the writing of history
What’s inside
- 1Manya of Warsaw1 min
Curie's later capacity for privation and secrecy was trained early, by growing up in a Poland where speaking Polish history aloud was a punishable act.
- 2The Governess Years1 min
Marie Curie's path to science ran through nearly a decade of deferred ambition, spent financing her sister's education before her own.
- 3The Sorbonne on Nothing1 min
Curie's early success in Paris depended on a self-imposed poverty so severe that it functioned as a form of discipline rather than mere hardship.
- 4A Marriage of Two Laboratories1 min
The Curies' partnership worked because it treated scientific collaboration and marriage as the same relationship, not two competing claims on each other's time.
- 5Four Tons of Pitchblende1 min
The discovery of radium was won primarily by physical endurance and repetitive manual labor, not by a single insight or experiment.
- 6Fame Without Patent1 min
Marie and Pierre Curie's decision not to patent the radium extraction process was a considered ethical stance, not naivety about money.
- 7Widowhood and the Sorbonne Chair1 min
Marie Curie's response to Pierre's sudden death was to absorb his professional role rather than withdraw from it, which reshaped what a woman could hold in French science.
- 8The Second Prize and the Scandal1 min
Public acclaim for Curie's scientific work did not protect her from a hostile press eager to punish her for a private life outside conventional expectations.
- 9The Little Curies1 min
Curie's wartime work fitting mobile X-ray units to ambulances shows that she measured science by its usefulness to people in front of her, not by prestige.
- 10Building the Institute, Selling Radium in America1 min
Curie recognized that a discovery without a lasting institution behind it would not survive its discoverer, and she spent her later career building that institution deliberately.
- 11The Cost the Work Extracted1 min
Marie Curie's death from radiation-induced illness was the direct, foreseeable consequence of decades of unprotected exposure that she and her era did not yet know how to measure.
About Ève Curie
Ève Curie (1904-2007) was the younger daughter of Marie and Pierre Curie. A journalist and writer rather than a scientist, she drew on family papers, letters, and her own childhood memories to write this biography in 1937, three years after her mother's death, giving it an intimacy no outside biographer could match.
