Moonwalking with Einstein
The Art and Science of Remembering Everything

What it's about
Foer, a science journalist, spent a year training with competitive memorizers and entered the US Memory Championship himself. The book argues that extraordinary memory is not an innate gift but a learned skill built on ancient techniques like the memory palace, and that our cultural offloading of memory onto books, phones, and search engines has eroded a capacity that once organized how people thought, learned, and lived.

Start a circle and share the code — everyone sees everyone's honest place in the book. Accountability, not leaderboards.
Who it's for
- Readers curious whether memory can actually be trained rather than inherited - Students and professionals who want practical techniques for retaining facts, names, and speeches - Anyone interested in the history of how writing and technology changed human cognition
What’s inside
- 1The Forgotten Art1 min
Modern memory decline is not a sign of natural human limitation but the result of a cultural choice to outsource remembering to external tools starting long before computers existed.
- 2The Man Who Couldn't Remember1 min
The case of patient Henry Molaison shows that memory is not one faculty but several distinct systems, and losing one does not mean losing all of them.
- 3The Memory Palace1 min
Any information becomes dramatically easier to remember once it is translated into vivid, spatially organized images, because the human brain evolved to remember places and pictures far better than abstractions.
- 4Training Like an Athlete1 min
Expert-level memory performance is built through structured, deliberate practice with continuous feedback, not through raw talent or occasional effort.
- 5Savants and the Limits of Natural Talent1 min
Cases of prodigious natural memory, like that of Kim Peek and other savants, actually support rather than undermine the idea that trained technique explains most expert memory performance, because savant memory is narrow and often comes bundled with other cognitive deficits.
- 6Memory and the Structure of Thought1 min
A trained memory is not just a party trick but changes how a person thinks, because it builds structured mental scaffolding that makes new knowledge easier to organize, retrieve, and connect.
- 7The Championship and Its Limits1 min
Winning the US Memory Championship demonstrates that these techniques generalize to real skill, but the victory also exposes how narrow and competition-specific the trained skill can remain without further work to apply it broadly.
About Joshua Foer
Joshua Foer is an American science journalist whose writing has appeared in National Geographic, Slate, and The New York Times. He researched this book by training under memory coach Ed Cooke and competing in the 2006 USA Memory Championship, which he won, giving him firsthand experience of the techniques he describes.
