What it's about
Indra Nooyi's memoir traces her path from a middle-class family in Chennai to the CEO office at PepsiCo, arguing that the workplace has never been designed for people who also carry the unpaid work of family care. She argues companies lose talent and productivity by ignoring caregiving, and she uses her own strained juggling act as evidence that even a powerful, well-paid executive cannot solve this alone through personal effort. The book matters because it moves the caregiving debate from complaint to corporate policy proposal.

What’s inside
- 1An Unlikely Starting Point1 min
Growing up in a rigid but intellectually demanding household in Chennai gave Nooyi tools that Western business schools alone could not have supplied.
- 2Learning to See the Whole Business1 min
Real strategic judgment comes from studying an industry from unglamorous angles, not from titles or credentials.
- 3Joining PepsiCo and the Long Climb1 min
Nooyi's rise at PepsiCo depended on being given hard, visible assignments rather than safe ones, and on choosing to take them.
- 4Performance with Purpose1 min
Reshaping a company's product portfolio toward long-term health trends can coexist with, rather than sacrifice, near-term financial performance.
- 5The Cost Nobody Puts on the Balance Sheet1 min
The unpaid work of caregiving is a hidden subsidy that props up paid work, and its absence from company accounting is a policy failure, not a private problem.
- 6What Companies Actually Lose1 min
Employee turnover and disengagement caused by unresolved caregiving conflicts are a quantifiable cost that most companies fail to track, let alone address.
- 7A Proposal for National Infrastructure1 min
Care work should be treated as public infrastructure requiring government investment, comparable to roads or broadband, rather than left to individual families and employer goodwill.
- 8Leaving the Corner Office1 min
