What it's about
Andrew Roberts draws on newly available letters—over 33,000 of Napoleon's own—to argue that Napoleon was not the tyrant of British caricature but a genuine product of Enlightenment ideals, a ruler who codified law, meritocracy, and modern administration across Europe while also waging near-constant war. Roberts contends his military genius and reforming statesmanship must be judged together, and that his downfall stemmed less from character flaws than from exhaustion, betrayal, and geography.

The Battle of Austerlitz in 1805 represents the high point of Napoleonic warfare because it fused deception, terrain, and timing into a single decisive stroke rather than relying on numerical superiority.

Napoleon's attempt to strangle Britain economically through the Continental System backfired by forcing him into wars of occupation, particularly in Spain, that bled his empire from within.
