What it's about
Ehrenreich, writing after the 1996 welfare reform act, set out to test the political claim that any job is enough to escape poverty. She worked minimum-wage jobs in three cities under an assumed identity, tracking whether wages could cover rent, food, and basic dignity. The book mattered because it turned an abstract policy debate into a concrete, city-by-city arithmetic problem, and the arithmetic did not work, forcing readers to reconsider what low-wage labor actually costs the people who perform it.

Who it's for
- Anyone who has never had to choose between paying rent and buying groceries and wants to understand what that choice actually involves - Policy readers evaluating welfare-to-work assumptions or minimum-wage debates who want a ground-level account rather than a spreadsheet - Managers and business owners who set scheduling, drug-testing, or wage policy for hourly workers and rarely see the downstream effects
What’s inside
- 1The Terms of the Experiment1 min
A short, voluntary stint in low-wage work with a safety net can still expose real structural failures, even though it cannot replicate the compounding damage of long-term poverty.
- 2Serving in Florida1 min
A full-time job at or near minimum wage, even with a second job added, can still leave a healthy single worker unable to afford stable housing in a low-cost tourist economy.
- 3Scrubbing in Maine1 min
Scarcity itself narrows the mental space available for planning, so behavior that looks like poor decision-making among the poor is often a predictable effect of exhaustion and constant financial triage rather than its cause.
- 4Selling in Minnesota1 min
Employers of low-wage workers often use surveillance, personality testing, and drug screening less to select for competence than to manufacture obedience and suppress collective organizing.
- 5The Hidden Arithmetic of Being Poor1 min
Poverty is expensive in ways that middle-class budgeting never has to account for, because the absence of savings forces poor people into higher-cost versions of every basic need.
- 6Dignity and Solidarity on the Floor1 min
Low-wage workplaces generate genuine pride, competence, and camaraderie among workers, which outside observers who focus only on exploitation tend to miss or flatten.
- 7The Failure of the "Any Job" Premise1 min
The 1996 welfare reform's core assumption, that moving from welfare to any available job would lift people out of poverty, does not hold when the jobs actually available pay less than the cost of subsistence.
- 8What the Market Alone Will Not Fix1 min
Because the mismatch between low wages and the actual cost of housing is structural, no amount of individual effort or better budgeting by workers can resolve it without changes to wages, housing subsidy, or collective bargaining power.
