What it's about
Timothy Snyder distills the collapse of European democracies in the 1930s and 1940s into a short set of practical warnings for citizens of any democracy. He argues that tyranny does not arrive as a single dramatic seizure of power but through small, cumulative acts of compliance, institutional erosion, and linguistic corruption. Written in the weeks after the 2016 US election, the book became a bestseller and a touchstone for civic anxiety, arguing that history offers usable lessons, not just cautionary stories.

Who it's for
- A citizen who wants a historian's framework for recognizing early warning signs of authoritarian drift - A reader of 20th-century European history who wants to see it applied to present institutions - Anyone looking for concrete, small-scale civic habits rather than abstract political theory
What’s inside
- 1Obeying in Advance1 min
The first and most dangerous concession to a would-be tyrant is the one citizens make voluntarily, before any law compels it.
- 2Institutions Do Not Defend Themselves1 min
Courts, unions, and a free press survive only because individuals inside and around them choose, case by case, to protect them rather than assuming they are self-sustaining.
- 3Emergencies as the Engine of One-Party Rule1 min
A declared crisis is the standard mechanism by which pluralist systems are converted into one-party states, which is why emergency powers must be treated as inherently suspicious rather than practically necessary.
- 4Language as the First Battlefield1 min
Political control over reality begins in vocabulary, so the corruption of everyday speech precedes and enables the corruption of politics itself.
- 5Truth Is Infrastructure, Not Opinion1 min
A shared factual baseline is a precondition for democratic politics, which means efforts to blur the line between fact and assertion are themselves a form of attack on self-government, not a debatable style of communication.
- 6Professional Ethics as a Private Check on Public Power1 min
People who hold firmly to the ethical core of their own occupation — regardless of new political demands — provide a form of resistance that formal politics cannot replace.
- 7Armed Groups Outside the State's Control1 min
The appearance of paramilitary forces loyal to a movement rather than to the law is an early and serious warning sign, not a marginal or symbolic nuisance.
- 8The Civic Habits That Resist Atomization1 min
Authoritarian power depends on isolating citizens from one another, so ordinary practices of physical presence, private life, and local organization are themselves a form of political resistance.
About Timothy Snyder
Timothy Snyder is a historian at Yale University specializing in Central and Eastern European history, the Holocaust, and mass political violence. His earlier books, Bloodlands and Black Earth, examine Nazi and Soviet terror in detail. On Tyranny was written quickly, as a direct response to what Snyder saw as warning signs in American politics after 2016.
