What it's about
Jonice Webb argues that many adults struggle with numbness, guilt, and disconnection not because of trauma or abuse, but because their parents failed to notice and respond to their emotions growing up. This absence, which she calls Childhood Emotional Neglect (CEN), leaves no visible scars but shapes adult relationships, self-worth, and emotional fluency. The book mattered because it named a form of harm that talk therapy often missed: neglect by omission rather than by act.

Who it's for

What’s inside
- 1The Neglect No One Sees1 min
Emotional neglect harms adults as deeply as active abuse does, even though it leaves no memory of a single bad event.
- 2Well-Meaning Parents, Missing Attunement1 min
CEN typically comes from ordinary parents with their own limitations, not from malice, which makes it harder to identify and easier to dismiss.
- 3The Adult Symptoms of an Empty Childhood1 min
A recognizable cluster of adult traits—numbness, guilt, low self-compassion, and difficulty asking for help—can be traced back to childhood emotional neglect.
- 4Alexithymia: A Language Never Learned1 min
The inability to name one's own emotions isn't a character flaw but a skill deficit that can be treated like any missing skill.
- 5The Neglect Disguised as Independence1 min
What looks like admirable self-sufficiency in CEN adults is often a defense built from never having had anyone to lean on.
- 6Self-Discipline Without Self-Compassion1 min
CEN adults often mistake harsh self-criticism for motivation, when in fact it depletes exactly the resource they need to change.
- 7Naming Feelings as a Daily Practice1 min
Recovery from CEN begins with the mechanical, repeated act of naming emotions, not with insight or catharsis.
- 8Rebuilding the Capacity to Receive1 min
Lasting recovery requires deliberately practicing dependence on others, which is more uncomfortable for CEN adults than any amount of independent effort.
