Say Nothing
A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland

What it's about
Keefe reconstructs the disappearance of Jean McConville, a Belfast mother abducted and killed by the IRA in 1972, to examine how the Troubles were fought and how they were remembered. Using the Boston College oral history tapes as a spine, he traces the lives of IRA members like Dolours Price and Brendan Hughes to argue that political violence leaves participants and societies trapped between the demand for justice and the need to keep functioning, often through collective silence.

What’s inside
- 1A Mother Vanishes1 min
Jean McConville's 1972 abduction and disappearance shows how the IRA's campaign against informers terrorized ordinary Catholic communities as much as it did the British state.
- 2The Price Sisters and the Making of Militants1 min
Dolours and Marian Price's radicalization shows that the IRA's most committed operatives were often shaped by inherited grievance and specific violent shocks rather than abstract ideology.
- 3Brendan Hughes and the Logic of the Armed Struggle1 min
Brendan Hughes's career as an IRA commander demonstrates that guerrilla effectiveness required a level of ruthlessness that its practitioners could not fully live with once the political goals changed.
- 4Gerry Adams and the Politics of Denial1 min
Gerry Adams's decades-long public denial of IRA membership, despite extensive testimony placing him in IRA leadership, exposes how political transformation in Northern Ireland required a foundational lie.
- 5The Boston College Tapes and the Failure of Sealed Testimony1 min
The Boston College oral history project shows that promises of confidentiality made to secure historical truth can collapse when they collide with active criminal investigations.
- 6Dolours Price's Collapse and Confession1 min
Dolours Price's late-life deterioration and public confessions suggest that unprocessed guilt from political violence can outlast the political cause that justified it.
- 7Finding Jean McConville1 min
The eventual recovery of Jean McConville's remains in 2003 shows that even successfully hidden violence generates persistent pressure toward disclosure, driven by grieving families rather than institutions.
- 8The Peace That Requires Forgetting1 min
The Good Friday Agreement's amnesty provisions and the broader culture of silence in Northern Ireland show that durable peace after civil conflict sometimes requires suppressing rather than resolving the truth.
