Scattered Minds
A New Look at the Origins and Healing of Attention Deficit Disorder

What it's about
Gabor Maté argues that attention deficit disorder is not a fixed genetic defect but a developmental injury: a disruption in the early attachment relationship between infant and caregiver that leaves the brain's self-regulation circuits underdeveloped. Drawing on neuroscience, attachment theory, and his own diagnosis, he reframes ADD as a symptom of stress and disconnection rather than a lifelong biological sentence, and argues this reframing changes how we treat it.

Who it's for
- Adults diagnosed with ADD or ADHD who want an explanation beyond "faulty brain chemistry" - Parents trying to understand a distracted or impulsive child without blame or panic - Therapists and physicians who want a developmental alternative to the standard biomedical model
What’s inside
- 1ADD Is Not Simply Inherited1 min
Attention deficit disorder is better understood as a response to early relational stress than as a fixed genetic trait passed down like eye color.
- 2The Attachment Relationship as Brain Architect1 min
The infant brain's circuits for attention and self-regulation are built through thousands of moment-to-moment interactions with a caregiver, not preloaded at birth.
- 3Stress Hormones and the Vulnerable Brain1 min
Chronic early stress floods the infant brain with cortisol in ways that can permanently blunt the systems responsible for attention and impulse control.
- 4Temperament Meets Environment1 min
A child's inborn sensitivity determines how much environmental stress it takes to produce ADD, which is why siblings raised in the same house can turn out very differently.
- 5Four Deficits, One Underlying Cause1 min
The scattered symptoms of ADD—poor attention, poor impulse control, poor emotional regulation, and poor working memory—are four expressions of a single failure of self-regulation, not separate problems.
- 6A Life Told Through Its Own Distraction1 min
A person's adult symptoms of ADD often make sense only when read backward through the specific emotional climate of their early childhood.
- 7Medication Helps the Symptom, Not the Cause1 min
Stimulant medication can genuinely improve functioning but should be understood as a temporary aid to the dopamine system rather than a treatment of the underlying developmental deficit.
- 8Healing Through Insight and Relationship1 min
Recovery from ADD's self-regulation deficits comes primarily through emotional self-awareness and repaired relationships, not through willpower or behavioral technique alone.
