What it's about
Mary Beard traces Rome from its mythical founding to 212 CE, when the emperor Caracalla granted citizenship to nearly all free inhabitants of the empire. Rather than offering a triumphant or declining arc, she treats Roman history as a contested set of stories, filtered through unreliable and self-interested sources. Her focus is on how Romans themselves argued about power, citizenship, and belonging, and why those ancient arguments still shape how modern societies think about political community.

Who it's for
- Readers who want a rigorous but accessible introduction to Roman history without prior classical training - History readers tired of tidy "rise and fall" narratives who want a more skeptical, source-critical account - Students of politics curious how ancient debates about citizenship and power still echo in modern institutions
What’s inside
- 1Starting in the Middle: Cicero and Catiline1 min
Beard argues that the best entry point into Roman history is not the founding myths but the Catiline conspiracy of 63 BCE, because it shows a fully functioning political culture already arguing about the same problems that recur throughout Rome's history and into modern politics: emergency power, due process, and the mob.
- 2Founding Myths as Later Inventions1 min
The Romulus and Remus story and the tale of the rape of the Sabine women are not dim memories of real events but retrospective fictions, composed centuries after the fact, that later Romans used to explain and justify their own identity as a city built on violence, asylum, and the absorption of outsiders.
- 3Kings, Their Expulsion, and the Fear They Left Behind1 min
The traditional list of seven kings and the story of Tarquin's expulsion in 509 BCE cannot be verified as history, but the decisive fact is that Republican Romans built their entire political identity around a fear of one-man rule, and that fear shaped institutions which would later prove unable to stop autocracy returning by other means.
- 4Conquest by Incorporation1 min
Rome's expansion across Italy and then the Mediterranean succeeded less through military superiority than through a distinctive willingness to extend rights, citizenship, and alliance to conquered peoples, converting former enemies into stakeholders in Roman success.
- 5The Gracchi and a Republic Under Strain1 min
The land reforms proposed by Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus in the 130s and 120s BCE reveal a Republic whose institutions could not absorb the inequalities generated by its own conquests, and their violent deaths mark the moment political disagreement began to be settled by killing rather than debate.
- 6Warlords and the Erosion of Shared Rule1 min
The Republic did not fall to a single tyrant but eroded gradually across the generation of Marius, Sulla, Pompey, and Caesar, as ambitious generals discovered that armies loyal to them personally, rather than to the state, could override Senate and law.
- 7Augustus and the Grammar of Disguised Monarchy1 min
Augustus's real achievement was not military conquest but a kind of institutional theater: he preserved nearly every Republican title, office, and procedure while quietly becoming the sole source of real power, proving that the outward form of a Republic could coexist indefinitely with the substance of one-man rule.
- 8Rome Beyond the Palace1 min
Because surviving Roman evidence is dominated by elite male writers describing emperors and senators, the actual lived experience of the majority of people under Roman rule, slaves, freedmen, women, soldiers, and provincials, is harder to recover but was arguably closer to ordinary Roman life than anything happening in the imperial palace.
- 9The Edict of Caracalla and the Logic of Citizenship1 min
Beard ends her narrative in 212 CE, when the emperor Caracalla extended citizenship to nearly all free inhabitants of the empire, because this act represents Rome's most lasting invention: a political community defined by shared legal status that could keep expanding without erasing the distinction between conqueror and conquered through force alone.
