What it's about
Antony Beevor reconstructs the battle of Stalingrad as the hinge of the Second World War, drawing on newly opened Soviet archives, German soldiers' letters, and interrogation records. He argues the battle was decided as much by Hitler's obsession with prestige and Stalin's ruthless refusal to yield territory as by tactics, and that the human cost—hunger, cannibalism, frostbite, mass surrender—reveals total war stripped of glory. The book mattered because it used archival access unavailable to Cold War historians to correct myths on both sides.

What’s inside
- 1A City Chosen for Its Name1 min
Stalingrad became a battle of symbolism rather than strategy, and that symbolism cost both dictators far more than the city was worth.
- 2Fighting in the Ruins1 min
Urban combat at Stalingrad reduced war to a scale where individual buildings, even single rooms, became the unit of measurement, favoring the defender.
- 3The Sixth Army's Illusion of Victory1 min
Paulus and his generals kept believing the city was nearly won even as their army bled out, because admitting failure meant defying Hitler.
- 4Operation Uranus and the Trap Closes1 min
The Soviet counteroffensive succeeded because it targeted the weakly held Romanian and Italian flanks rather than the German core, exploiting exactly the overextension the previous chapters describe.
- 5Hitler's Refusal and Manstein's Failed Rescue1 min
Hitler's order to hold Stalingrad at all costs, against the advice of his own generals, turned a difficult but survivable encirclement into a certain catastrophe.
- 6Starvation, Frostbite, and Collapse1 min
The physical destruction of Sixth Army through starvation and cold was as decisive as Soviet weapons, and it was substantially self-inflicted by Hitler's no-retreat order.
- 7Surrender and the Myth of the Iron Will1 min
Paulus's surrender on 31 January 1943, and Hitler's promotion of him to Field Marshal the day before specifically to induce suicide instead, exposed the moral bankruptcy underneath the propaganda of heroic sacrifice.
- 8The Turning of the War1 min
Stalingrad marked the point where German strategic initiative on the Eastern Front ended permanently, making it a genuine turning point rather than merely one defeat among many.
