The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America

What it's about
Kendi traces the history of racist ideas in America from 1619 to the present by following five figures—Cotton Mather, Thomas Jefferson, William Lloyd Garrison, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Angela Davis. His central claim reverses the usual story: racist ideas were not the cause of racist policy but its aftermath, invented to rationalize practices already adopted for power and profit. The book matters because it reframes racism as a problem of policy and self-interest, not merely of individual belief or education.

Who it's for
- Readers who want a rigorous history of how racial hierarchy was argued for, decade by decade, in America - Students of policy or law who want to see how legal and economic decisions get retrofitted with justifying ideas - Anyone who has heard 'ignorance and hate cause racism' and wants a documented counter-argument
What’s inside
- 1Policy Before Prejudice1 min
Racist ideas are produced after the fact to justify policies already adopted for power and profit, not the other way around.
- 2Three Camps, Not Two1 min
American racial thought has always split into three positions—segregationist, assimilationist, and antiracist—and the real fight is often between the second and third, not the first and third.
- 3Jefferson's Contradiction1 min
Enlightenment reason did not dissolve racist hierarchy; it gave that hierarchy a scientific vocabulary that outlasted religious justifications.
- 4Abolition's Assimilationist Core1 min
Even the abolitionist movement mostly argued against slavery using assimilationist logic that still measured Black worth by white standards.
- 5Reconstruction's Reversal1 min
Emancipation did not end the policy-idea cycle; it triggered a new round of racist ideas built to justify re-establishing hierarchy after formal freedom.
- 6Du Bois and the Talented Tenth1 min
W.E.B. Du Bois's own thinking shows how a brilliant antiracist scholar could still carry assimilationist assumptions for decades before revising them.
