Why You Can't Pay Attention—and How to Think Deeply Again

What it's about
Johann Hari argues that the collapse in human attention is not a personal failing but a designed outcome of technology, work, diet, sleep loss, and childhood environments. Drawing on interviews with neuroscientists, tech insiders, and educators across multiple countries, he contends that willpower and productivity apps cannot fix a problem built into business models and social structures. The book mattered because it reframed distraction as a political and economic issue, not a character flaw.

Who it's for
- Anyone who feels unable to read a book or hold a thought and suspects it isn't just them - Parents worried about children's screen time and shrinking attention spans - Managers and policymakers looking for evidence behind calls to regulate tech platforms and workplace culture
What’s inside
- 1Running Away to Think1 min
Individual willpower cannot fix an attention crisis that is engineered into the technology and culture surrounding us, so personal detoxes fail once you return to normal life.
- 2Attention as the Fuel of a Meaningful Life1 min
Deep, sustained attention is a prerequisite for pursuing meaningful long-term goals, so a society that fragments attention is quietly undermining people's capacity for self-direction.
- 3The Business Model Built on Hijacking You1 min
Major tech platforms are not accidentally distracting but are deliberately engineered—using techniques borrowed from slot-machine psychology—to maximize time on device because that is their core revenue model.
- 4The Myth of Multitasking1 min
The brain cannot actually perform two demanding cognitive tasks simultaneously, so what feels like multitasking is really rapid switching that carries a measurable and cumulative cost to the quality of thought.
- 5A Sleep-Deprived World Cannot Concentrate1 min
Chronic sleep deprivation, driven partly by screens and partly by work and social pressures, is degrading attention and memory on a population-wide scale that most people fail to recognize in themselves.
- 6Why Boredom and Mind-Wandering Matter1 min
Constant stimulation eliminates the idle, mind-wandering states the brain needs for creativity and problem-solving, so eliminating boredom has hidden intellectual costs.
- 7Bodies Out of Balance: Diet, Pollution, and Movement1 min
Physical factors largely absent from the cultural conversation—ultra-processed food, air pollution, and declining exercise—measurably impair the brain systems responsible for attention.
- 8Childhood Under Surveillance and Without Play1 min
Children today have far less unsupervised free play than previous generations, and this loss—not just screens—is a major and underappreciated driver of rising attention problems in the young.
- 9Work Cultures That Manufacture Distraction1 min
Modern workplace practices, especially open-plan offices and job insecurity, actively undermine sustained attention despite being marketed as productivity innovations.
- 10What Actually Works: Systemic Change Over Personal Hacks1 min
The attention crisis can only be meaningfully reversed through collective and regulatory change—restructured work, redesigned technology business models, and protected childhood time—not through individual productivity techniques.
