What it's about
Waitzkin argues that mastery is a transferable skill in itself, built from a small set of psychological practices—how you relate to failure, distraction, and depth—rather than from talent or domain-specific tricks. Drawing on his own path from chess prodigy to martial arts world champion, he shows that the same internal discipline that wins a chess game can win a push-hands match, suggesting that learning how to learn matters more than what you learn.

Pick a finish date and Genius lays out the days — the plan shows today's target and keeps you honest.
Read together
Start a circle and share the code — everyone sees everyone's honest place in the book. Accountability, not leaderboards.
Who it's for
- Competitive performers (athletes, musicians, traders) who plateau despite technical skill and want to understand the mental side of improvement - Coaches, teachers, and parents deciding whether to praise talent or effort in the people they develop - Career changers who want a framework for transferring hard-won skill from one field into an unrelated one
What’s inside
- 1Two Ways of Explaining Why You're Good1 min
A learner's belief about whether ability is fixed or built determines whether a loss feels like proof of inadequacy or useful data, and this belief predicts long-term development better than early talent does.
- 2Falling in Love with the Middle1 min
Durable excellence comes from finding genuine pleasure in the confusing middle of learning a skill, not from chasing the trophies that mark its edges.
- 3Making Smaller Circles1 min
Mastery is not the accumulation of more techniques but the progressive compression of a few principles until they can be executed with almost no visible motion or conscious effort.
- 4Numbers to Leave Numbers1 min
Technical fundamentals must first be learned explicitly and mechanically before they can be safely forgotten, because intuition that skips this stage is unreliable under pressure.
- 5The Soft Zone1 min
Peak performance depends on the ability to absorb disruption into your focus rather than requiring ideal, distraction-free conditions to concentrate.
- 6Investment in Loss1 min
Genuine improvement requires deliberately entering positions where you are likely to lose or look weak, because avoiding those positions to protect your ego also protects your weaknesses from correction.
- 7The Downward Spiral and the Discipline of Recovery1 min
The difference between strong and weak competitors under pressure is not the absence of mistakes but the speed of recovery after one, and that recovery speed can be trained directly.
- 8Slowing Down Time1 min
The subjective sense that expert performers have more time to react than novices is a real effect of pattern recognition, not a mystical gift, and it can be deliberately cultivated.
- 9Turning Injury into Material1 min
A setback, including physical injury or a public loss, can be actively converted into a competitive advantage rather than merely endured, if the competitor is willing to change strategy around it.
