The Boys of Summer
A memoir of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and of a father and son, and of what happens to men when the game ends

What it's about
Roger Kahn covered the Brooklyn Dodgers as a young reporter in 1952 and 1953, then returned fifteen to twenty years later to find those players as middle-aged men coping with illness, obscurity, and loss. The book argues that the real story of any team is not the pennant race but what becomes of the men after the cheering stops. It mattered because it treated ballplayers, and Jackie Robinson especially, as full human beings rather than heroic types, and helped establish sportswriting as serious literature.

Who it's for
- Baseball fans who want the emotional weight behind the box scores, not more statistics - Readers who enjoy memoir that braids personal history with reported journalism - Anyone interested in how Jackie Robinson's integration of baseball played out inside a clubhouse
What’s inside
- 1A Title Borrowed from a Poem1 min
The book's premise is that the phrase 'boys of summer,' taken from Dylan Thomas, is ironic rather than sentimental, because these men were never boys and summer never lasts.
- 2A Father, a Borough, and a Boy's First Loyalty1 min
Kahn argues that a childhood passion for a team is inseparable from the family that hands it down, so that loving the Dodgers was really a way of loving, and later mourning, his father.
- 3From Fan to Reporter1 min
Kahn contends that genuine access to a team requires shedding fandom entirely, and that the discipline of daily beat reporting, not talent alone, is what let him see these men clearly.
- 4Robinson and the Weight of Being First1 min
Kahn argues that Jackie Robinson's presence morally transformed the Dodgers clubhouse, forcing white teammates to choose, publicly or privately, whether to stand with him.
- 5A Clubhouse of Distinct Men1 min
Kahn's portraits insist that a championship team is not a unit but a collection of sharply different personalities held together by circumstance, and that this friction is what made the team memorable.
- 6Wait Till Next Year1 min
Kahn treats the Dodgers' repeated World Series losses to the Yankees as more than bad luck, arguing that the pattern of near-miss defeat gave Brooklyn's identity its particular, defensive character.
- 7O'Malley's Decision and the End of Ebbets Field1 min
Kahn argues that Walter O'Malley's move of the Dodgers to Los Angeles after the 1957 season converted a living civic institution into a fixed, unreachable memory, changing the emotional register of everything that came before.
- 8The Search, Fifteen Years Later1 min
Kahn argues that the true test of a man's character shows not in his best season but in how he lives afterward, which is why he built the book's second half around personal visits rather than statistics.
- 9Decline, Illness, and Ordinary Endurance1 min
Kahn argues that these men's later hardships, illness, obscurity, and financial struggle, do not diminish their earlier greatness but complete it, showing that heroism and vulnerability were never separate.
- 10Fathers, Sons, and What the Boys of Summer Really Means1 min
Kahn closes by arguing that the book's real subject was never baseball but the passage of time between generations, and that nostalgia is honest only when it admits the people it remembers were never as simple as memory makes them.
