What it's about
Don Miguel Ruiz argues that most human suffering comes from beliefs we absorbed as children without ever agreeing to them, and that freedom is available by consciously replacing those inherited rules with four simple commitments about how to speak, react, interpret, and act. Framed as ancient Toltec wisdom, the book became a global self-help phenomenon by turning abstract spiritual ideas into a short, repeatable practice.

Who it's for
- Someone who replays their own mistakes for days and wants a way to stop - A reader drawn to spiritual self-help who wants a short, practical framework rather than a long philosophical treatise - Anyone in a strained relationship who keeps assuming they know what the other person is thinking
What’s inside
- 1The Domestication of Humans1 min
Nearly all of our self-judgment and belief about right and wrong was installed by other people through reward and punishment, not chosen by us.
- 2The Judge, the Victim, and the Book of Law1 min
Suffering is maintained by an internal judge that punishes us according to standards we never chose, paired with an internal victim that accepts the punishment as deserved.
- 3The First Agreement: Be Impeccable with Your Word1 min
Because words function as a kind of spell that shapes belief, using them carelessly against yourself or others is a primary, avoidable source of suffering.
- 4The Second Agreement: Don't Take Anything Personally1 min
What other people say and do is a reflection of their own experience and fears rather than an objective verdict on your worth.
- 5The Third Agreement: Don't Make Assumptions1 min
Most conflict and unnecessary suffering come from assuming we already know what others think, want, or mean, instead of simply asking.
- 6The Fourth Agreement: Always Do Your Best1 min
Because your capacity changes from day to day, judging today's effort against a fixed or idealized standard produces unnecessary guilt rather than better outcomes.
- 7Breaking Old Agreements and Living the New Dream1 min
Freedom is not achieved by understanding the four agreements once, but by repeatedly noticing and interrupting the old domesticated rules in the moment they activate.
About Don Miguel Ruiz
Don Miguel Ruiz trained in traditional Toltec spirituality under his mother, a healer, and grandfather, a shaman, before becoming a surgeon. A near-fatal car accident redirected him toward teaching this inherited wisdom. The Four Agreements, published in 1997, sold millions of copies and made him a leading figure in modern spiritual self-help.
