The Happiness Advantage
The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work

What it's about
Shawn Achor argues that the common formula—work hard, succeed, then be happy—has the causal arrow backwards. Drawing on positive psychology research from his time teaching at Harvard, he claims happiness and optimism are not rewards for achievement but the fuel that produces it. The book mattered because it translated academic positive psychology into a business case, arguing that companies investing in employee wellbeing would see measurable gains in sales, creativity, and productivity.

What’s inside
- 1The Happiness Advantage1 min
Happiness is not a byproduct of success but a precondition for it, so chasing achievement first gets the sequence backwards.
- 2The Fulcrum and the Lever1 min
The mindset you bring to a situation determines how much of your actual capability you can use, more than the situation itself does.
- 3The Tetris Effect1 min
The brain can be trained, through repetition, to automatically scan for opportunity and positive pattern instead of defaulting to threat and deficit.
- 4Falling Up1 min
How a person interprets a setback determines whether that setback becomes a launching point or a trap, and this interpretation can be deliberately shaped.
- 5The Zorro Circle1 min
Regaining a sense of control after feeling overwhelmed requires deliberately shrinking your focus to a small, manageable domain before expanding it.
- 6The 20-Second Rule1 min
Willpower is a limited and unreliable resource, so lasting habit change depends on redesigning the environment to change activation energy, not on trying harder.
- 7Social Investment1 min
Social support is not a pleasant extra during hard times but the single strongest predictor of resilience, and cutting off from others under stress is the most self-defeating response available.
