What it's about
Robert Greene argues that most human behavior is driven by unconscious emotional patterns rather than conscious reason, and that people who learn to recognize these patterns in themselves and others gain a decisive advantage in work and relationships. Drawing on Freud, Jung, and hundreds of historical case studies, Greene frames eighteen recurring 'laws' of behavior, from irrationality to grandiosity to death denial, as tools for self-mastery and social insight.
Reading plan
Pick a finish date and Genius lays out the days — the plan shows today's target and keeps you honest.
Read together
Start a circle and share the code — everyone sees everyone's honest place in the book. Accountability, not leaderboards.
Who it's for
- A manager who keeps getting blindsided by conflicts they didn't see coming and wants a framework for reading motives. - A reader of Greene's earlier books who wants the psychological theory behind the strategic tactics. - Anyone recovering from a bad relationship or workplace betrayal who wants language for what happened to them.
What’s inside
- 1The Law of Irrationality1 min
Human beings are not fundamentally rational actors, and the feeling of being rational is itself the main obstacle to good judgment.
- 2The Law of Narcissism1 min
Everyone operates somewhere on a spectrum of narcissism, and the presence of self-focus is not pathological in itself but becomes destructive only when it fails to develop into empathy.
- 3The Law of Role-Playing1 min
People almost never state their true motives directly, and the real skill in understanding others lies in reading the gap between the performance and what leaks through it under pressure.
- 4The Law of Compulsive Behavior1 min
A person's true character is revealed not by their stated intentions but by the behaviors they involuntarily repeat, especially under pressure, and those patterns are more predictive than anything they tell you about themselves.
- 5The Law of Covetousness1 min
Desire is generated by absence, scarcity, and mystery rather than by availability, so becoming too present or too easily understood destroys the very quality that makes you attractive to others.
- 6The Law of Shortsightedness1 min
Most people react to immediate stimuli and near-term emotion, so a durable strategic advantage goes to whoever can hold a longer time horizon and see the larger pattern before acting.
- 7The Law of Repression1 min
The traits people most deny in themselves do not disappear; they leak out in disguised and often destructive forms, and consciously integrating them produces more control, not less.
- 8The Law of Envy1 min
Envy is the most concealed of emotions because admitting to it is humiliating, and that concealment is precisely what allows it to operate covertly and corrosively in close relationships.
- 9The Law of Grandiosity1 min
Success, not failure, is what most reliably destroys judgment, because it convinces people they are exempt from the ordinary constraints and preparation that produced their success in the first place.
- 10The Law of Death Denial1 min
Confronting mortality directly, rather than avoiding it through busyness and status-seeking, produces a clearer sense of proportion and urgency than any of the earlier psychological strategies can supply on their own.
