What it's about
David Grann reconstructs the life and disappearance of British explorer Percy Fawcett, who vanished in 1925 while searching the Amazon for a lost civilization he called Z. Weaving Fawcett's Edwardian-era expeditions with his own journey retracing them a century later, Grann argues that Fawcett's obsession was not simple madness but a rational response to real, if garbled, evidence of pre-Columbian complexity in a rainforest that science had dismissed as uninhabitable. The book mattered because it reopened debate about Amazonian archaeology just as new findings vindicated parts of Fawcett's hunch.

What’s inside
- 1The Making of an Explorer1 min
Fawcett's early career as a British artillery officer and surveyor shows that his later obsession grew out of a disciplined, technically skilled mind rather than pure fantasy.
- 2The Jungle as Enemy1 min
Grann argues that the Amazon's physical hostility, not native peoples, was the primary force that killed or broke nearly every expedition into it.
- 3The Birth of Z1 min
Fawcett's belief in a lost city called Z rested on a mix of genuine archaeological clues, colonial-era manuscripts, and his own confirmation bias.
- 4Fame, Funding, and the Public Imagination1 min
Fawcett's celebrity in Britain and America turned his search into a media spectacle that pressured him toward increasingly reckless decisions.
- 5The Final Expedition and Disappearance1 min
Fawcett's 1925 expedition failed not from a single dramatic event but from the cumulative, ordinary hazards that had killed so many before him.
- 6The Cult of Z: Those Who Followed1 min
The mystery of Fawcett's fate generated its own dangerous mythology, luring more than a hundred subsequent searchers to their deaths or ruin.
- 7Grann's Own Journey and the Archaeological Vindication1 min
Modern archaeological findings, particularly Michael Heckenberger's work with the Kuikuro people, show that Fawcett's core intuition about complex pre-Columbian societies in the Amazon was substantially correct, even if his details were wrong.
