What it's about
Kanigel tells the story of Srinivasa Ramanujan, a self-taught clerk in colonial Madras who filled notebooks with original mathematics no one around him could evaluate, and of his unlikely rescue by the Cambridge mathematician G.H. Hardy. The book argues that raw mathematical genius can arise outside formal training, but that it still depends on institutions, patrons, and luck to be recognized, and that the collision of Ramanujan's intuitive style with Western rigor produced both extraordinary results and a cost that shortened his life.

Who it's for
- Readers curious about how outsider genius gets discovered, or missed, by institutions - Students of mathematics history who want the human story behind formulas and theorems - Anyone interested in colonial India, cross-cultural collaboration, or the price of intellectual ambition
What’s inside
- 1A Boy and His Slate1 min
Ramanujan's mathematical gift emerged not despite his impoverished, rigidly religious upbringing in Kumbakonam but partly because of it, since Tamil Brahmin culture prized memorization and abstract contemplation in ways that fed his obsession with numbers.
- 2Clerk by Day, Mathematician by Night1 min
Ramanujan's years of poverty and clerical drudgery in Madras were not wasted time but the period in which he built, alone and unsupervised, the vast private mathematics that would later stun the world.
- 3The Letter to Hardy1 min
Hardy's decision to take a stranger's unsolicited letter seriously, rather than dismiss it as a crank submission, was itself an act of mathematical judgment as consequential as any theorem he ever proved.
- 4Two Kinds of Mind at Cambridge1 min
The partnership between Hardy and Ramanujan worked because each supplied what the other lacked, Hardy's rigor completing Ramanujan's intuition, but this same asymmetry meant Ramanujan was pressured to abandon his own way of working rather than being met halfway.
- 5A Foreigner's Body in a Foreign Climate1 min
Ramanujan's fatal illness was not simply bad luck but the predictable result of an environment that failed to accommodate his religious dietary restrictions and his unfamiliarity with an English climate, a failure of care that his hosts were slow to recognize.
- 6Recognition, at Last and Too Late1 min
The honors Ramanujan received, election to the Royal Society and a Trinity College fellowship, arrived as genuine institutional validation, but they came so late and so entangled with his declining health that they could not undo the years of neglect that preceded them.
- 7Return and Death1 min
Ramanujan's death at thirty-two in his home country, surrounded by family but far from the mathematical community that had finally embraced him, underscores how completely his short life had been shaped by forces outside his control.
- 8The Notebooks After Ramanujan1 min
Ramanujan's true influence on mathematics was not fully realized until long after his death, when later mathematicians proved, refined, or applied results he had recorded without proof, showing that genius alone was not sufficient, verification and extension by a community were required to make his work usable.
About Robert Kanigel
Robert Kanigel is an American writer and biographer specializing in the history of science and engineering, previously known for a study of efficiency expert Frederick Taylor. He is not a mathematician by training, but spent years researching Ramanujan's life in India and England, drawing on notebooks, letters, and interviews with surviving relatives and scholars.
